Analysis and Assessment of
Gateway Process
1. You tasked me to provide an assessment of the Gateway Experience in terms of its mechanics and ultimate practicality. As I set out to fulfill that tasking it soon became clear that in order to assess the validity and practicality of the process I needed to do enough supporting research and analysis to fully understand how and why the process works.
2. Frankly, sir, that proved to be an extremely involved and difficult business. Initially, I had recourse to the biomedical models developed by Itzhak Bentov to obtain information concerning the physical aspects of the process. Then I found it necessary to delve into quantum mechanics in order to describe the nature and functioning of human consciousness. I had to construct a scientifically valid model of how consciousness functions under the influence of brain hemisphere synchronization as employed by Gateway.
3. Once this was done, the next step involved recourse to theoretical physics in order to explain the character of the time-space dimension and the means by which expanded human consciousness transcends it in achieving Gateway's objectives. Finally, I needed to be able to describe the holographic model of the universe so that the reader could understand the relationship between the universe and human consciousness.
Related Techniques as Context
4. The Monroe Institute program profitably employs a variety of techniques — some commonplace, some more exotic — in the Gateway training. In order to understand how and why the Gateway process works it is first necessary to appreciate the significance of the following background techniques.
5. Hypnosis. It is well established that hypnosis works by causing the left hemisphere of the brain to go into a sleep state so that the right hemisphere can be accessed by the hypnotist. The left hemisphere is the analytical, verbal part of the brain. In ordinary consciousness it screens all input and processes it through a filter of preconceived constructs and concepts. Hypnosis short-circuits this filtering function. Gateway differs from hypnosis in that it does not depend on an external hypnotist — the participant retains full volition and conscious control throughout.
6. Transcendental Meditation.Transcendental Meditation uses a mantra to focus the concentration and to draw energy up the spinal column. Over the long period of practice required by TM (15 to 20 years), this process creates standing acoustic waves in the brain's ventricles. The limitation is obvious: it requires extraordinary patience and discipline over decades of practice.
7. Biofeedback. Biofeedback uses electronic devices to train the left brain to recognize and replicate specific brainwave states associated with right-brain intuitive function. Gateway incorporates this principle but delivers it through audio rather than electronic instrumentation — dramatically reducing the complexity and cost of achieving the same outcome. Hemi-Sync is the audio technology through which this is achieved.
The Hemi-Sync Mechanism
8. The Hemi-Sync technique works as follows. The left hemisphere of the brain is presented with one frequency in one ear while the right hemisphere receives a slightly different frequency in the other ear. The brain "hears" the mathematical difference between the two as a binaural beat and attempts to entrain its own brainwave output to match it. This is called the Frequency Following Response.
9. Because the low frequencies associated with altered states of consciousness are below the threshold of ordinary hearing, binaural beats represent the only practical method for introducing sub-audible brainwave-range frequencies into the brain. A 4 Hz Theta beat, for example, is produced by sending 100 Hz to the left ear and 104 Hz to the right. The brain resolves the difference.
10. What Hemi-Sync achieves, when properly applied, is to simultaneously: (a) relax the left hemisphere and quiet its analytical filtering function; (b) place the body in a virtual sleep state while the mind remains alert; (c) bring both hemispheres into coherence; and (d) progressively elevate brainwave amplitude and frequency toward the range of full hemispheric synchronization.
11. The metaphor employed in the program is apt: the ordinary conscious mind resembles an incandescent light bulb, scattering energy diffusely in all directions. Under Hemi-Sync, consciousness becomes a laser — coherent, focused, and enormously more powerful because all energy waves are aligned in phase and frequency.
Resonance and Body Vibration
12. When the heart ejects blood into the aorta, a pressure wave travels down its length. At the point where the aorta forks in the lower abdomen, a portion of this wave reflects back upward and collides with the next outgoing pulse. This is the bifurcation echo. In ordinary waking states, these two waves produce a complex interference pattern. In deep relaxation, the heart rate slows enough that the echo fades and the body achieves a single, clean, resonant sine wave.
13. Bentov's biomedical research demonstrated that this resonant state oscillates the body at approximately 7 to 7.5 Hz — matching the Schumann Resonance, the natural electromagnetic resonance of the Earth's ionospheric cavity. The body, in effect, becomes a tuned antenna synchronized with the planet's electromagnetic field.
14. This vibration transmits through the fluid surrounding the brain (the dura), establishing a micromotion pattern that generates electromagnetic pulses and raises brainwave amplitude and frequency. The brain physically oscillates 0.005 to 0.010 mm in a rhythmic pattern. The resulting electromagnetic signal, at 6.8 to 7.5 Hz and a wavelength of approximately 40,000 km — the circumference of the Earth — passes through all physical matter: metal, concrete, water, organic material. Bentov describes this as "the ideal medium for conveying a telepathic signal."
Consciousness, Energy, and Holograms
15. Solid matter does not exist in the strict physical sense. Atoms are oscillating energy grids surrounded by other oscillating energy grids. The nucleus vibrates at approximately 10²² Hz; a single atom at 10¹⁵ Hz; a live human cell at approximately 10³ Hz. Human consciousness is an extraordinarily complex system of energy fields.
16. Drawing on the work of Karl Pribram at Stanford and David Bohm at the University of London, we can say: the universe is a gigantic hologram of interacting energy fields, some at rest, some in motion. The human mind is also a hologram that attunes itself to the universal hologram through resonant energy exchange. In holographic terms, "the part encodes the whole" — even a fragment of a hologram contains the entire image, though with reduced resolution.
17. The right hemisphere acts as the primary receptor for holographic input. The left hemisphere provides secondary processing — reducing three-dimensional holographic data to two-dimensional verbal/conceptual form. As psychologist Keith Floyd observed: "It may not be the brain that produces consciousness — but rather, consciousness that creates the appearance of the brain."
18. Expanding the frequency and amplitude range of consciousness expands which portions of the universal hologram are accessible. This is the operating principle of Gateway.
Time-Space and the Absolute
19. Time is a measurement of energy in motion — specifically, the measurement of change relative to a fixed reference point. Space is the capacity for energy to be confined at a specific location. Energy without form or limit — infinite energy — cannot move, has no location, and therefore exists outside the time-space dimension. This infinite, formless, conscious energy is what the report designates the Absolute.
20. Any oscillating wave pattern reaches two points of complete rest per cycle. At these rest points, the oscillating energy briefly exits the time-space dimension when its speed drops below Planck's Distance (10⁻³³ centimeters). At that threshold — at that infinitesimal gap in the wave cycle — we enter, in effect, a new world.
21. Human consciousness wave patterns oscillate at such high frequency that these "click-out" intervals have virtual continuity. A portion of consciousness is, at any given moment, operating in dimensions between time-space and the Absolute. In those intermediate dimensions, the rules of linear causality and sequential time do not apply. Access to past and future becomes theoretically possible.
The Cosmic Egg and the Torus Model
22. Drawing on Bentov's cosmological model from Stalking the Wild Pendulum: the universe has the overall shape of a torus — a donut-shaped, self-contained spiral. Matter is ejected from a "white hole" at one pole, travels around the shell, and is reabsorbed at a "black hole" at the other. This forms the continuous cosmic egg pattern independently identified by scholars across ancient Eastern civilizations.
23. The torus is being generated simultaneously by matter in all phases of time. Past, present, and future all exist at once within this holographic structure. A sufficiently focused consciousness could, in principle, perceive how energy patterns cross and recross to form the four-dimensional torus — and in doing so, perceive events not yet manifest in physical time.
24. The practical implication for Gateway is significant: the REBAL (Resonant Energy Balloon) technique, which asks practitioners to visualize a continuous egg-shaped energy field surrounding the body, is not arbitrary. It mirrors the cosmological geometry of the universe itself, and this geometric resonance is hypothesized to amplify the practitioner's energy field.
The Out-of-Body State
25. The out-of-body state involves projecting a major portion of the energy pattern constituting consciousness outside the physical body. The projected consciousness may then move freely through the terrestrial sphere or into other dimensions. Three conditions must be met simultaneously:
(a) Profound physical quiet — the bifurcation echo fades and the body resonates at approximately 7 Hz. (b) Brain hemisphere synchronization — coherent wave patterns across both hemispheres. (c) Right hemisphere stimulation — heightened alertness in the right brain, but only after condition (b) is established. Premature right-hemisphere stimulation interferes with the process.
26. Consciousness, like the Absolute, has neither beginning nor end. It exists beyond the bounds of the time-space dimension. Memory is a function of consciousness and therefore shares its eternal character. Return of consciousness to the Absolute does not extinguish individual identity — it implies a differentiated consciousness that merges with the universal while retaining self-knowledge.
27. A note on the reliability of out-of-body perception: information gathered in the out-of-body state can be distorted by holographic interference. Energy patterns from other time periods — past events at the same physical location — may mingle with present reality. Additionally, holograms can be viewed "inside out or backwards" (pseudoscopically), creating spatial and temporal distortions that the analyst must account for.
The Gateway Training Method
28. The Monroe Institute's Gateway Experience proceeds through a structured sequence of techniques, each building on the last. The preparatory phase establishes the foundational conditions; subsequent phases progressively expand the practitioner's range of consciousness.
29. The four primary Focus states are operationally defined as follows: Focus 10 (Mind Awake / Body Asleep) is the platform for initial exploration. Focus 12 (Expanded Awareness) is the state from which all advanced techniques — Problem Solving, Patterning, Color Breathing, Energy Bar Tool, Remote Viewing, and Living Body Map — are conducted. Focus 15 (No Time) involves dissolution of linear temporal awareness and access to past timelines; fewer than 5% of participants achieve stable Focus 15 in standard 7-day training. Focus 21 (Other Dimensions) represents the limit of documented Gateway exploration.
30. The Resonant Energy Balloon (REBAL) technique is introduced at the Focus 10 level. The practitioner visualizes a flow of energy rising from the center of the body, out through the crown of the head, cascading down in all directions, and cycling back up through the base of the body in a continuous loop — forming a torus-shaped protective and amplifying energy field.
Conclusions and Recommendations
31. On the basis of this analysis it is the opinion of this office that Gateway represents a legitimate, scientifically consistent method for expanding human consciousness. The program is not in any sense pseudo-scientific or mystical in its orientation — it is grounded in quantum mechanics, acoustics, and the holographic model of the universe.
Direct Quotation — Report Conclusion
"There is a sound, rational basis in terms of physical science parameters for considering Gateway to be plausible in terms of its essential objectives."
32. A phased approach is recommended: initial training through Focus 10 and Focus 12 to establish basic competence; progressive advancement through higher Focus levels as individual capability permits; and supplementary use of autohypnotic suggestion and REM-sleep induction for operational applications.
33. The critical limiting factor is not the technology or the time investment, but the practitioner's willingness to release personal anxieties, unresolved emotional material, and self-limiting constructs. The speed of progress is less a function of hours practiced than of the speed with which the individual can use the insights gained to release anxieties and stresses within both mind and body.
34. Unlike yoga, Zen, or Transcendental Meditation — which may require decades of patient practice — Gateway does not require "the infinite patience and total personal subservience to and faith in a system of discipline." It begins producing results within a relatively short time, and those early results create the feedback and motivation to continue.
